galette des rois

The Galette des Rois is a tradition celebrated in France since the 14th century. The day of Epiphany the Kings Gaspar, Melchior and Balthazar come to pay their tribute to baby Jesus 12 days after his birth. While the official day of Epiphany is January 6th, people share this special dessert throughout January. Beyond the religious origin, it became over the years a country celebration that every baker, and chef amateur will enjoy creating.

The classical King Cake is composed of frangipane, a sweet-almond-based paste. A “fêve” is hidden inside.

In our family, the youngest child in the room would hide underneath the table and decide who would receive which slice of the cake. The person who finds the trinket becomes the King or the Queen of the day. We're having very special memories with our elderlies - some of them are no longer with us - and it's very important to us to pass it on to our children.

Kings’ day is January 6th, so you can pre-order this very special new year's cake on French Wink. It will be shipped from January 4th and available throughout the month of January. Pick up at the store is also available

To celebrate with kids, you can find tons of websites out there offering paper crown tutorials and activities around the king cake and a famous French song that every kid in France knows ;)
