Le Serail has created the traditional Marseille Soap for over 50 years !
It is one of the last workshop in the city of Marseille, creating the world-renowned Marseille soap in the traditional manner. tThe soap of Marseille is produced in a metal cauldron according to a saponification process long-known as the "Marseille method".
The soap master starts by mixing vegetable oils and alkaline ash in a large metal cauldron. Mediterranean Sea salt is added. The mixture is then heated using hot water vapor that flows through the bottom of the tank via a coil. A chemical reaction occurs and the alkaline component turns the mixture into soap. Then the soap mixture is boiled for 4 hours. A series of rinses with cold water is sprayed over the mixture. While the soap mixture is resting, the casting molds are prepared. When ready the hot soap mixture flows into the molds. The soap is now left to dry for 48 hours as it is cooled slowly. Lines are traced on the surface of the cooled soap slab then the cutting begins. Large blocks of soap are placed on a cart and wheeled to the cutting table where they are sliced by steel wires to obtain the traditional cubes of Marseille soap. In the final step, the soap maker places each cube in a century-old molding machine and stamps the dry cube with the "Savon de Marseille" logo.
These square soap of Marseille are enriched with organic olive oil.
